Isaiah 24

First post of the new year, hope everyone had a nice festive period.  Despite starting work yesterday I am off sick on the second day - I guess the cold I had before Christmas never really went away.  Praise God for allowing me to be well enough to spend Christmas celebrations with my family though.

Just wanted to upload a quick post about this sort of amazing revelation I had, before my headache comes back to torture me.

I know a lot of people who are somewhat shocked when I say I am a Christian, simply because my actions don't show it.  And to some extent I am embarrassed when I do say I am a follower of Christ because I don't show it.  I guess you could say I have given in to peer pressure, as a lot of my friends and family do not share the same beliefs as me.

As I was sitting on the edge of my bed this morning, not knowing what to do with myself I picked up my Bible and done my devotions - something I do once in a blue moon now.  I turned to Isaiah 24 and this was the message of the day:

Isaiah 24

The LORD’s Devastation of the Earth
 1 See, the LORD is going to lay waste the earth
   and devastate it;
he will ruin its face
   and scatter its inhabitants—
2 it will be the same
   for priest as for people,
   for master as for his servant,
   for mistress as for her servant,
   for seller as for buyer,
   for borrower as for lender,
   for debtor as for creditor.
3 The earth will be completely laid waste
   and totally plundered.
   The LORD has spoken this word.
 4 The earth dries up and withers,
   the world languishes and withers,
   the heavens languish with the earth.
5 The earth is defiled by its people;
   they have disobeyed the laws,
violated the statutes
   and broken the everlasting covenant.
6 Therefore a curse consumes the earth;
   its people must bear their guilt.
Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up,
   and very few are left.
7 The new wine dries up and the vine withers;
   all the merrymakers groan.
8 The gaiety of the timbrels is stilled,
   the noise of the revelers has stopped,
   the joyful harp is silent.
9 No longer do they drink wine with a song;
   the beer is bitter to its drinkers.
10 The ruined city lies desolate;
   the entrance to every house is barred.
11 In the streets they cry out for wine;
   all joy turns to gloom,
   all gaiety is banished from the earth.
12 The city is left in ruins,
   its gate is battered to pieces.
13 So will it be on the earth
   and among the nations,
as when an olive tree is beaten,
   or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest.
 14 They raise their voices, they shout for joy;
   from the west they acclaim the LORD’s majesty.
15 Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD;
   exalt the name of the LORD, the God of Israel,
   in the islands of the sea.
16 From the ends of the earth we hear singing:
   “Glory to the Righteous One.”
   But I said, “I waste away, I waste away!
   Woe to me!
The treacherous betray!
   With treachery the treacherous betray!”
17 Terror and pit and snare await you,
   people of the earth.
18 Whoever flees at the sound of terror
   will fall into a pit;
whoever climbs out of the pit
   will be caught in a snare.
   The floodgates of the heavens are opened,
   the foundations of the earth shake.
19 The earth is broken up,
   the earth is split asunder,
   the earth is violently shaken.
20 The earth reels like a drunkard,
   it sways like a hut in the wind;
so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion
   that it falls—never to rise again.
 21 In that day the LORD will punish
   the powers in the heavens above
   and the kings on the earth below.
22 They will be herded together
   like prisoners bound in a dungeon;
they will be shut up in prison
   and be punished after many days.
23 The moon will be dismayed,
   the sun ashamed;
for the LORD Almighty will reign
   on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
   and before its elders—with great glory.

For those of you who live in Britain, you will understand that instead of having snow this year, the country has suffered severe damage to buildings, transport and also claimed the lives of many due to the wind and rain.  In weather terms, this was an European hurricane.

I found this passage so apt to today's circumstances.  Me being a science geek I have always blamed it on global warming.  The way our ancestors treated the earth when they discovered oil really irritates me because they didn't think of the ramifications.  However, upon reading today's word, that just isn't the case.  I have always known that Earth just isn't where we belong.  And I am angry at myself that I haven't shared the Lord's word to my nearest and dearest.  And I am angry at the fact that my actions haven't allowed people to see that I am God's child.  Our sins have effectively accerlerated the deterioration rate of the world and only when we believe and renounce sin will this rate decrease.

2012 resolution:  To really assess my relationship with God, on how to improve and restrengthen it but also to introduce others to Him by proclaiming on how great the Good News is.

This isn't just a new years resolution, I aim to do this for the whole year and the rest of my life.  Please join me.
